shoji

This ash wall mounted cupboard, inspired by Shoji (traditional Japanese sliding paper doors), allows the user to discreetly store precious items within one half whilst exhibiting items in the other. This product explores the Japanese tradition of exhibiting a seasonal piece, be it a plant or craft piece as a starting point of conversation but to also encourage a moment of reflection and relaxation as one walks through the door.

The circular panel twists horizontally to unlock the door, the slats act as a metaphorical cue as to how the door opens. When vertical the slats represent a resistance of movement juxtaposing the horizontal slats, when the disk is turned 90 degrees they are no longer resisting the horizontal movement required to open the door.
